Electrical work in Melbourne

  • NAPIT registered, every job certified

Melbourne is one of South Derbyshire's prettiest towns, with Melbourne Hall and its gardens, the Norman church of St Michael and St Mary, and the Pool at its heart. Its streets are full of Georgian and Victorian houses and cottages, many of them listed, alongside later homes on the edges. Older buildings here deserve electrical work that does not spoil them, so we plan cable routes carefully, protect floors and finishes, and leave a full certificate when we're done.

Homes in Melbourne

Melbourne's conservation area, designated in 1969, has the densest cluster of listed buildings in South Derbyshire. The town's character is late Georgian, with a lot of red-brick houses with stone lintels. There are older timber-framed houses, 3 still thatched, a terrace on Station Road built from 1843, and the 14 Thomas Cook Memorial Cottages of 1890 and 1891. In Georgian rooms we plan socket and switch positions around shutters, panelling and original plaster.

Melbourne in numbers

From the 2021 Census, for the 2,359 households in the streets around Melbourne.

  • 36%of homes are detached (England: 23%). Bigger houses usually mean more circuits and longer cable runs, so a rewire or a new board takes a little more planning. Rewires
  • 15%of households rent from a private landlord (England: 18%). Landlords in England must have the electrics inspected at least every five years and give tenants a copy of the report. Our EICRs start at £150 plus VAT. EICRs and fuse boxes
  • 48%of households have two or more cars or vans (England: 35%). Fitting a home charger you’ve bought yourself costs £450 plus VAT, and one well-placed charger can serve both sides of a drive. EV chargers
  • 27%of homes have four or more bedrooms (England: 21%). Larger homes often outgrow their original board as kitchens, offices and garden rooms are added. Consumer unit upgrades

Asked in Melbourne

Our Georgian house in Melbourne has panelled rooms. Can sockets be added without spoiling them?

Usually. We can put sockets in the skirting, in floor boxes, or on walls where the panelling stops. Cables run under the floor rather than behind the panels. If the house is listed, check with South Derbyshire District Council before work that touches original features.

We're renovating a Victorian terrace on Station Road in Melbourne. When should you come in?

Before the plasterer. We do first fix, the cables and back boxes, once the walls are opened up, then come back for second fix, the sockets, switches and board, after plastering and decorating. Getting us in early stops new plaster being cut later.
