If your fuse box still has old wire fuses, no RCD protection, or a plastic case from years ago, a replacement is one of the most worthwhile safety upgrades you can make. Josh or one of the team replaces old fuse boxes across Derby and Derbyshire with a modern consumer unit, tests every circuit, and gives you the certificate and Building Control notification at the end.

What a fuse box replacement includes

We fit a new metal consumer unit (the modern name for a fuse box) with an RCBO on each circuit, which cuts the power in a fault before it becomes a shock or a fire, plus surge protection (SPD) to guard against voltage spikes. Before we start, we test the existing circuits and check the earthing and bonding to your gas and water pipes, because a new board is only as safe as the wiring connected to it. After fitting, every circuit is tested and labelled, and you get an Electrical Installation Certificate plus the Building Regulations certificate, since replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P.

Fuse box replacements across Derby and Derbyshire

We replace fuse boxes across the area, from Normanton and Alvaston to Darley Abbey, Allestree and the surrounding villages. Landlords: a new board doesn't replace your five-yearly EICR, but it often clears the issues an EICR flags.

Good questions

How much does a fuse box replacement cost in Derby?

From £650 plus VAT for a typical home. That covers a new metal consumer unit, individual RCBO protection for each circuit, surge protection (SPD), full electrical testing, the Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification to Building Control. The price assumes your existing installation is safe and suitable for the upgrade. You get a written quote before we start. If testing turns up a problem on an existing circuit, we explain it and quote the extra work separately before doing anything.

How long does it take?

Usually half a day to a day, with the power off while the new board goes in. We'll tell you the day before roughly when the power will be off, so you can plan around it.

Does an old fuse box always need replacing?

No. Age on its own isn't a reason. Signs that it does need replacing: wire fuses rather than trip switches, no RCD protection, a scorched or damaged case, or a board that can't take a new circuit you need, such as an EV charger. If you're not sure, an EICR will tell you exactly where you stand.

Why does a new fuse box need RCD protection?

RCDs (and RCBOs, which combine an RCD with a circuit breaker) switch the power off in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, which is what happens when someone touches a live fault. Older boards without them can leave a fault live. Protecting each circuit individually also means a fault on one circuit doesn't take out the whole house.

I spoke to somebody on the phone and they were great at providing me with information and really helpful. I then booked in with them the next day to fix a tumble dryer plug and they came out within 4 hours and were extremely fast and very friendly. Thankyou for all your help. Great price too

Josh and his team have done a brilliant job installing electrics into our summer house and we are really pleased with their work. The work was done to an extremely high standard and they worked really hard all day in sweltering heat. They were also very professional. We would 100% recommend them.

Josh has been world class from the start. Clear communication, amazing worth ethic to stay on schedule (lads even working on Saturday), trustworthy, reliable, and very detailed. He was happy to respond rapidly to specific technical requests and last minute changes in spec. His flexibility is what set's him apart for me. We had multiple phases to the job, and he was happy to work along with my schedule, and honour prices as agreed. Whenever I have any electrical questions, I send for Josh. Thanks so much for the great work guys!

Josh and James from JJS Electrical Solutions did a full rewire of our house and we honestly couldn’t fault them. They were friendly, easy to deal with, and explained everything clearly along the way. They turned up when they said they would, worked really hard, and the standard of their work was spot on. Even with a big job like a full rewire, they kept disruption to a minimum and always cleaned up after themselves. Really happy with the end result and would definitely recommend Josh and James to anyone needing electrical work done.

Josh installed a new consumer unit and my EV charger. He turned up on time, explained everything clearly and worked neatly. The wiring is tidy, the charger works perfectly and he issued all certificates promptly. Fair price and great communication throughout and I highly recommend him.
