Chellaston has grown enormously over the last few decades, and it's now one of Derby's most modern suburbs, estate after estate of newer family homes on the south side of the city. Newer housing means the wiring is generally sound, so this isn't rewire country in the way the older suburbs are. What it does mean is demand for EV chargers, because so many of these homes have driveways and two-car households, along with consumer unit work and the electrics for extensions, garden offices and the like. If you're adding an EV charger or a circuit for a new room in Chellaston, that's squarely what we do.

Homes in Chellaston

Chellaston had just 42 houses in 1789. It grew a lot between 1880 and 1950, along Glenwood Road, Station Road and north of Sutton Avenue. After 1950 came the Springfield Road and St Peter's Road areas, then large developments on Sutton Avenue, Maple Drive and Parkway by the 1990s. Newer estates have since gone up to the east off Snelsmoor Lane and to the west, including Chellaston Fields in South Derbyshire. The 1990s houses often have a board with a single RCD covering half the circuits, which is fine until a fault takes out half the house.

From the 2021 Census, for the 3,147 households in the streets around Chellaston.

  • 42%of homes are detached (England: 23%). Bigger houses usually mean more circuits and longer cable runs, so a rewire or a new board takes a little more planning. Rewires
  • 33%of households own their home outright (England: 33%). If you’ve lived somewhere for years and never had the wiring tested, an EICR tells you where it stands. Ours start at £150 plus VAT. EICRs and fuse boxes
  • 46%of households have two or more cars or vans (England: 35%). Fitting a home charger you’ve bought yourself costs £450 plus VAT, and one well-placed charger can serve both sides of a drive. EV chargers
  • 31%of homes have four or more bedrooms (England: 21%). Larger homes often outgrow their original board as kitchens, offices and garden rooms are added. Consumer unit upgrades

The jobs we do most here

Much of the work in Chellaston is EV chargers, consumer unit changes, and wiring for extensions and garden rooms.

Covering Chellaston and nearby

We cover Chellaston, Shelton Lock and the DE73 postcode, along with Aston-on-Trent and Barrow upon Trent. With so many newer homes here, most of our work is adding to a sound installation: EV chargers, circuits for extensions and loft rooms, and outdoor power. We check what the existing consumer unit can take first, then give you a written price for the lot.

Asked in Chellaston

Do you cover Chellaston Fields, even though it is in South Derbyshire?

Yes. The council boundary makes no difference to the work. Building control notification goes to whichever council covers your address, and NAPIT handles that once we have certified the job. You don't need to do anything different.

Our 1990s house off Maple Drive has one RCD. Should we change the board before a loft conversion?

Probably. The new loft circuits need RCD protection, and adding them to an old split-load board means one fault can trip half the house. A board with a separate RCBO on each circuit avoids that. We test the existing wiring first and price the board with the loft work.
