Air conditioning keeps a room cool on hot days and warm on cold ones. We fit wall-mounted units in homes across Derby and Derbyshire. Josh is F-gas certified, and the electrical supply is included, tested and certified. Here's what you get, what it costs and how it works.

What you get

A split system has two parts. The indoor unit sits high on the wall and blows cool or warm air into the room. The outdoor unit sits outside, on a wall or on the ground. A short pipe run through the wall joins them, carrying the refrigerant pipes, the cable and a small drain for the water the unit takes out of the air.

It's a heat pump, so the same unit cools in summer and heats in winter. Modern wall units are quiet, and Wi-Fi models let you switch them on from your phone before you get home.

The kind of unit we fit

For a single room we fit units such as the Haier Revive 3.2 kW (indoor unit AS35RBAHRA-4 with outdoor unit 1U35YESFRA-4), a wall-mounted split heat pump:

  • 3.2 kW of cooling (0.8 to 3.8 kW)
  • 3.9 kW of heating (0.7 to 4.0 kW)
  • R32 refrigerant and an A++ seasonal efficiency rating
  • Wi-Fi control through Haier's hOn app, and by voice through smart speakers
  • Self-cleaning: it heats the coil to 56°C for 30 minutes, and it can freeze the coil and wash the dust off as it thaws
  • An iFeel remote, which senses the temperature where you're sitting rather than up at the unit

We recommend the right unit for your room at the visit.

What the starting price covers

The £1,495 starting price is for one room with a back-to-back system (the indoor unit on an outside wall, with the outdoor unit directly behind it outside), up to 3 metres of pipework and trunking, and power from a local fused circuit. Anything beyond that, such as a longer pipe run or the outdoor unit somewhere else, we look at during the free visit and put in your written quote, so you know the full figure before we start.

Who fits it

Air conditioning work involves handling refrigerant gas, which by law needs F-gas certification. Josh holds an F-gas certificate, a brazing qualification (for joining the copper refrigerant pipes) and training in air conditioning, and he's a member of REFCOM, which certifies businesses under the F-gas regulations. The electrical side is done by the same NAPIT-registered team that does all our electrical work.

How it works

  1. A free visit. We look at the room, where the outdoor unit can go, and the route for the pipes and the drain.
  2. A written quote. The unit, the work and the price, in writing.
  3. Installation. The indoor unit, the outdoor unit and the pipe run between them, fitted neatly.
  4. The electrical supply, certified. We power the unit from a local fused circuit, then test the electrical work and certify it to BS 7671.

Air conditioning across Derby and Derbyshire

We fit air conditioning right across the area, from Oakwood, Spondon and Chaddesden to Mickleover, Littleover, Allestree and Chellaston, and out into the wider Derbyshire villages.

Flick’s tip

Before we visit, have a look at where the outdoor unit could go. An outside wall close to the room keeps the pipe run short and tidy.

Good questions

How much does air conditioning cost in Derby?

Air conditioning with us starts from £1,495 including VAT, with the electrical supply included. That's for one room with a back-to-back system on an outside wall, up to 3 metres of pipework and trunking, and power from a local fused circuit. More rooms, a large or open-plan space, a conservatory, a long pipe run or an awkward spot for the outdoor unit all change the price, and we price those at the free visit. For a guide in about a minute, try the air conditioning price calculator.

Can air conditioning heat as well as cool?

Yes. Most modern split systems are heat pumps that can run in reverse. In winter they take heat from the outside air and move it indoors, even when it's cold out. The Haier Revive 3.2 kW, for example, gives up to 3.9 kW of heat. Read more in can air conditioning heat your home?

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Often not, but it depends on your home. In England, many home installations can go ahead without a planning application under permitted development rules, as long as they meet the conditions. Those cover things like how many outdoor units you have, their size, where they sit on the house and how much noise they make. Listed buildings and conservation areas have different rules, and if you're in a flat or rent your home you may need the freeholder's or landlord's say-so too. The rules do change, so check the current guidance on the Planning Portal or with your local council before you commit. If we spot anything at the visit, we'll tell you. There's more in our guide, do you need planning permission for air conditioning?

Does air conditioning need an outdoor unit?

A split system does. The outdoor unit moves heat in or out of your home, so it has to sit outside with air around it, usually on a wall bracket or on the ground. It connects to the indoor unit through a small hole in the wall. Where it goes affects the length of the pipe run, which is one of the things that moves the price.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

It needs a suitable fused supply. For the standard installation we power it from a local fused circuit, and that's included in the starting price. We test the electrical work and certify it to BS 7671.

Do you service air conditioning?

Yes. We offer a service every year, from £120 + VAT per unit. Regular servicing keeps the unit clean and running efficiently.

Is your installer F-gas certified?

Yes. Josh holds an F-gas certificate and a brazing qualification, is trained in air conditioning and is a member of REFCOM.

Josh has been world class from the start. Clear communication, amazing worth ethic to stay on schedule (lads even working on Saturday), trustworthy, reliable, and very detailed. He was happy to respond rapidly to specific technical requests and last minute changes in spec. His flexibility is what set's him apart for me. We had multiple phases to the job, and he was happy to work along with my schedule, and honour prices as agreed. Whenever I have any electrical questions, I send for Josh. Thanks so much for the great work guys!

Josh and James from JJS Electrical Solutions did a full rewire of our house and we honestly couldn’t fault them. They were friendly, easy to deal with, and explained everything clearly along the way. They turned up when they said they would, worked really hard, and the standard of their work was spot on. Even with a big job like a full rewire, they kept disruption to a minimum and always cleaned up after themselves. Really happy with the end result and would definitely recommend Josh and James to anyone needing electrical work done.
