Medieval Ripley was a few stone cottages and farms. It grew with the Butterley Company, founded in 1790. At Hammersmith the company bought land in 1819, and by 1821 had built pairs of 4-room brick cottages with slate roofs, plus long terraces on the west side. More short rows went up on Butterley Hill in the mid-1800s. The parish has 62 listed buildings in sandstone, gritstone and red brick.
