Electrical work in Ilkeston

Ilkeston is a former mining and industrial town in Erewash, and it shows in the housing: rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces close to the centre, a lot of them rented or recently bought to do up. Older terraces mean older wiring, so rewires and fuse-board upgrades come up often, as do landlord EICRs across the town's rental stock. Further out there's post-war and newer housing that tends to want consumer unit work and EV chargers. As a town in its own right, Ilkeston has its own demand, people here search for a local electrician, not a Derby one, and we cover the town properly.

Homes in Ilkeston

Ilkeston went from under 2,500 people in 1800 to over 19,000 by about 1890. Framework knitting came first, then hosiery and lace factories, and the Midland Railway arrived in 1847. The town centre conservation area, designated in 1979, takes in Bath Street, Market Place, South Street and Wharncliffe Road. After the war came council estates such as Cotmanhay, under way by 1952, and later Park Farm at Larklands. Victorian houses here may have lighting with no earth. Post-war council homes often had cooker points and sockets that suit far smaller loads than today.

Covering Ilkeston and nearby

We cover Ilkeston and the DE7 postcode, including Kirk Hallam, Cotmanhay and West Hallam. Older terraces near the town centre often still have dated fuse boards and wiring that has been added to over the years, so an inspection is usually the best place to start. On newer estates we fit EV chargers, extra circuits and outdoor power, all tested and certified.

Asked in Ilkeston

We own a Victorian house off Wharncliffe Road. Can you put sockets in the attic rooms?

Yes. In older houses the attic is often wired from the floor below, or not at all. We run new cables through the floor void and up the wall, and if the upstairs circuit is already busy, we give the attic its own. If the house is in the conservation area, it only matters for outside work.

Our Cotmanhay house has a cooker switch with a socket on it. Is it still OK to use?

Usually, if it tests well. Those combined units were common for years. The problem comes with a new induction hob or a double oven, which can need a bigger cable and breaker than the original circuit. Tell us what you're fitting and we'll check.
