Smalley stretches along the A608 with its pubs, village stores and a mix of older cottages and later estate houses, while Smalley Common runs out towards the fields. The older properties are where we find the most variety: original wiring alongside later additions, outbuildings fed from the house, and boards that have been tinkered with. Newer homes usually want something added, such as an outside socket, garden lighting or an EV charger. Whatever the job, we test it fully and issue the certificate before we leave.

Homes in Smalley
Smalley's listed houses include Smalley Hall, from the 1700s and enlarged twice since, and Smalley Lodge, built in 1861 to a design by W. E. Nesfield. Smalley Common was a mining settlement. About 61 identical colliery terraces went up on Spencer Street and Blunt Street around 1887 to 1901, rented from the National Coal Board from 1946, with no bathrooms until the late 1960s. That area has since been redeveloped and has merged with Stanley Common. Homes that gained bathrooms late often have wiring added in stages, with bathroom circuits from a different decade to the rest.

The jobs we do most here
For Smalley homes it's usually new boards, rewires in older cottages, or outdoor power for gardens and workshops.

We cover Smalley, Smalley Common and the nearby DE7 villages including Morley, Horsley Woodhouse and Stanley, with Heanor a few minutes further on. For older cottages we take time to plan cable routes that avoid needless damage to walls and floors.
Asked in Smalley
Our Smalley Common house had its bathroom added in the 1960s. Could that circuit be out of date?
Possibly. Bathrooms wired then often have no RCD protection, and fittings may sit too close to the bath or shower by current rules. We test the circuit and check the zones. Usually a new board and a few changes in the bathroom bring it up to standard.
Can you put power into a workshop behind our house in Smalley?
Yes. We run a correctly sized armoured cable from the house to a small board in the workshop, with RCD protection. If you'll use heavy tools or a heater, tell us, so the supply is sized for it. We check the house board can take the extra load first.
