West Hallam is a village just west of Ilkeston, with a medieval church, the Bottle Kiln café and gift shop, and a good deal of housing built in the 1960s and 1970s. Homes from that era are now fifty or more years old, and many still have their original circuits even where the board has been changed. We test, advise honestly on whether a rewire is needed, and handle upgrades such as new boards, extra sockets and car chargers.

Homes in West Hallam

West Hallam sits on a sandstone ridge, and the old village has been a conservation area since 1978. Most older buildings are red brick, many now rendered. The Newdigate estate cottages, built between about 1820 and 1914, have decorative bargeboards and small sentry-box porches, and Cinder Cottage of 1833 is faced in clinker. West Hallam Hall was pulled down in 1938 and Hall Court built on its site in 1963. The large Beechcroft estate was started in 1974. Houses from the 1970s have PVC cable that usually tests well and boards that are often original.

Asked in West Hallam

We're selling our house on the Beechcroft estate. Will a buyer's survey flag the board?

Very likely, if it's the original. Surveyors often note an old board with no RCD and recommend an electrical inspection. Having an EICR done before you list means you can answer that early, and fix anything simple before it holds up the sale.

Our Newdigate estate cottage in West Hallam has a small porch. Can you fit an outside light there?

Yes. A light in the porch, wired through the wall from inside, keeps cables off the front. On a cottage in the conservation area, a plain fitting suits it best. If the cottage is listed, check with Erewash Borough Council first.

Really impressed with Josh. I arranged to get a quote for a new consumer unit and he turned up on time to do this and it was sent quickly. Once I approved the quote which was very reasonable he spent most of the day installing it…
