Breadsall is a small village just north of Derby, with old cottages around All Saints' Church and larger homes on its edges. In the older houses the wiring has usually been extended bit by bit, so inspections, rewires and board changes are the regular jobs. The bigger houses bring their own work, such as power to garages and outbuildings, garden lighting and EV chargers. We're a few minutes away in Chaddesden, so it's easy to come and look.

Homes in Breadsall

Breadsall has been a conservation area since 1978 and has 10 listed buildings. Several are early 17th-century timber-framed cottages with brick infill, including Ivy Cottage, 23 Rectory Lane and Rose and Shamrock Cottage, and 1 Pall Mall is red brick from 1711. Breadsall Manor is a former rectory of the early 1800s, and The Old Hall may date from the 1300s. Timber-framed houses need cable routes that run along the frame, never notched into it. Lath and plaster ceilings crack easily, so we work from above wherever we can.

Asked in Breadsall

Our Breadsall cottage is timber-framed. Can we have downlights in the kitchen?

Possibly, but it is often not the best choice. Cutting holes in old ceilings between beams can weaken lath and plaster, and some fittings run hot. Pendants, track lights or wall lights often suit an old kitchen better and need fewer holes. We'll talk through what works in your room.

We want power and lights in the old stable at the bottom of our Breadsall garden. Is that possible?

Yes. We run an armoured cable from the house board, buried or fixed along a wall, to a small board in the stable. The house board has to be able to take the extra load, so we check that first. If the stable is listed with the house, that may need consent too.

I contacted Josh from a local magazine initially to put a new light in and then to have all my light switches replaced. Josh has been professional, polite, on time and respectful on both visits…

I spoke to somebody on the phone and they were great at providing me with information and really helpful. I then booked in with them the next day to fix a tumble dryer plug and they came out within 4 hours and were extremely fast and very friendly. Thankyou for all your help. Great price too

Josh and his team have done a brilliant job installing electrics into our summer house and we are really pleased with their work. The work was done to an extremely high standard and they worked really hard all day in sweltering heat. They were also very professional. We would 100% recommend them.

Josh has been world class from the start. Clear communication, amazing worth ethic to stay on schedule (lads even working on Saturday), trustworthy, reliable, and very detailed. He was happy to respond rapidly to specific technical requests and last minute changes in spec. His flexibility is what set's him apart for me. We had multiple phases to the job, and he was happy to work along with my schedule, and honour prices as agreed. Whenever I have any electrical questions, I send for Josh. Thanks so much for the great work guys!
