Little Chester stands on the site of Derventio, the Roman fort beside the Derwent, and today it has a strong period character, with Victorian terraces, Parker's Piece and St Paul's church at its centre. These homes have features worth protecting, from original cornices to fireplaces, so we take our time over cable routes and making good. A typical job here is replacing an old fuse board, rewiring a terrace that still has early PVC cable, or adding lighting that suits the age of the house. All of it is tested and certified when we finish.

Homes in Chester Green

Little Chester sits on the site of Derventio, the Roman fort, and is the oldest lived-in part of Derby. Chester Green itself has been a public park since 1866. Much of the housing around it came from Alfred Seale Haslam, who built a large number of good-quality houses for his workforce over 40 years, some of them set around the green. St Paul's Church dates from 1850. Homes of this age were not built for electricity at all. Any wiring has been added since, often more than once, so we find mixed cable types and old circuits running alongside newer ones.

Chester Green in numbers

From the 2021 Census, for the 3,476 households in the streets around Chester Green.

  • 36%of homes are terraced (England: 23%). Older terraces often have solid walls, so cable routes are planned room by room to keep chasing to a minimum. Rewires
  • 25%of households rent from a private landlord (England: 18%). Landlords in England must have the electrics inspected at least every five years and give tenants a copy of the report. Our EICRs start at £150 plus VAT. EICRs and fuse boxes
  • 12%of homes are heated by electricity alone (England: 9%). Storage and panel heaters put a heavy, steady load on the wiring, so the board and circuits are worth checking. Fuse box upgrades

Asked in Chester Green

My Little Chester terrace has the board in the cellar. Can it be moved upstairs?

Usually. If the cellar is damp or awkward to reach, we can fit the new consumer unit in the hall or under the stairs and run new tails from the meter. The meter stays where it is unless your supplier agrees to move it. We'll check the route before quoting.

Will a rewire in my Chester Green house mean taking up every floorboard?

No. We lift selected boards along the cable routes, usually near walls and doorways, and put them back as we go. Downstairs we sometimes work from the cellar instead. You'll know which rooms are affected and in what order before we start.

I contacted Josh from a local magazine initially to put a new light in and then to have all my light switches replaced. Josh has been professional, polite, on time and respectful on both visits…
