Oakwood went up mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, and many houses were built to similar plans. That helps us. We can usually tell you quickly what a board upgrade or a charger involves. Plenty of the original consumer units are still in place, and they lack the RCD protection a modern installation expects, so board changes are one of the most common jobs here. Most homes have a drive or garage, which keeps EV chargers simple. Extra sockets, outdoor power and lighting changes make up much of the rest, all tested and certified.

Homes in Oakwood

Oakwood was built mainly in the 1980s and 1990s and at the time was one of the largest new housing estates in Europe. Houses are still being added. The ward also takes in the Durose Country Park estate, and green footpaths run through the whole area, with Chaddesden Wood surviving from the original oak wood. Wiring from that period is PVC and normally sound. The boards are the weak spot. Early 1980s ones often have no RCD at all, and 1990s ones tend to have a single RCD shared by half the circuits.

Asked in Oakwood

We're turning the integral garage in our Oakwood house into a room. What do we need electrically?

A garage conversion needs sockets, lighting and often heating, all on circuits with RCD protection. It also needs building regulations approval, and the electrical part is notified under Part P when we certify it. If the old garage was fed by a single socket off the house, we replace that properly.

The previous owner added sockets in our Oakwood loft. How do we know they were done properly?

Ask your conveyancer whether there was an electrical certificate or Part P notification for the work. If there wasn't, an EICR will show whether the loft circuit is safe, protected and correctly connected. We often find loft sockets spurred from a downstairs ring, which can overload it.

I contacted Josh from a local magazine initially to put a new light in and then to have all my light switches replaced. Josh has been professional, polite, on time and respectful on both visits…

I spoke to somebody on the phone and they were great at providing me with information and really helpful. I then booked in with them the next day to fix a tumble dryer plug and they came out within 4 hours and were extremely fast and very friendly. Thankyou for all your help. Great price too

Josh and his team have done a brilliant job installing electrics into our summer house and we are really pleased with their work. The work was done to an extremely high standard and they worked really hard all day in sweltering heat. They were also very professional. We would 100% recommend them.

Josh has been world class from the start. Clear communication, amazing worth ethic to stay on schedule (lads even working on Saturday), trustworthy, reliable, and very detailed. He was happy to respond rapidly to specific technical requests and last minute changes in spec. His flexibility is what set's him apart for me. We had multiple phases to the job, and he was happy to work along with my schedule, and honour prices as agreed. Whenever I have any electrical questions, I send for Josh. Thanks so much for the great work guys!
