Darley Abbey is a former mill village on the River Derwent, part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, and many of its cottages date from the late 1700s and 1800s. Working in homes of that age takes care: cable routes have to be planned around original features, and much of the village is a conservation area. We carry out rewires, consumer unit upgrades and EICRs in Darley Abbey with that in mind, and we also work for businesses in the converted mill buildings by the river.

Homes in Darley Abbey
Darley Abbey is a planned mill village. Between 1792 and 1826 Thomas Evans built more than 130 houses for his mill workers. Flat Square and West Row are 3-storey terraces from 1792, the Four Houses off Mile Ash Lane are said to be the oldest surviving cluster houses in England, and the rendered cluster houses on New Road date from 1826. The village is a conservation area and part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Solid brick walls and lime plaster mean cable routes need planning, and many homes are listed.

Asked in Darley Abbey
Does the Article 4 direction in Darley Abbey affect fitting an outside socket?
It might. The direction removes some permitted development rights, such as for satellite dishes, so anything fixed to the outside of a house is worth checking with Derby City Council's conservation team. Listed homes need listed building consent for work that affects their character. We'll tell you what to ask before we fix anything.
My cluster house shares walls with the neighbours. Can you rewire without disturbing them?
Yes. We keep all chasing and fixings on your side of the party walls and never drill through. Some noise is unavoidable on the days we cut into walls, so it is worth telling the neighbours. We plan those days in advance so you can give them notice.

An EICR check carried out for us by Josh was prompt and efficient, his communication was excellent and his price was fair, will definitely use him again.
JJS came to the rescue this evening for a lovely elderly couple that needed a little extra help. Josh came along and made sure everything was safe and gave them reassurance they needed.
Really impressed with Josh. I arranged to get a quote for a new consumer unit and he turned up on time to do this and it was sent quickly. Once I approved the quote which was very reasonable he spent most of the day installing it…
Knowledgeable, diligent and friendly. Josh did a great job fitting a new light for me and kept me informed of what he was doing and what was required. Thank you, very happy with the service.
