  • NAPIT registered, every job certified

Shardlow grew in the eighteenth century as an inland port where the Trent and Mersey Canal meets the Trent, and its brick warehouses, wharves and workers' cottages still line the water. Many have been converted into homes, offices and pubs. Old buildings like these need electrical work that respects their fabric, with cable routes planned around solid walls and beams. We rewire, replace old boards and design lighting that suits the property, and the finished work comes with full certification.

Homes in Shardlow

Shardlow is often called Britain's most complete surviving canal village. Its warehouses date from the 1770s to about 1820, including the Clock Warehouse of 1780, and most are now businesses or private homes. Workers' cottages and merchants' houses grew up alongside, as the population went from 200 in 1780 to over 1,300 by 1841. The Shardlow Wharf conservation area, designated in 1975, has more than 50 Grade II listed buildings. Old brick near water can hold damp, which is hard on back boxes and connections. Fixings in listed buildings need agreeing first.

Asked in Shardlow

We live in a converted canal warehouse in Shardlow. Can new lights be fixed to the old beams?

Possibly, but if the building is listed you'll need consent for anything that alters the beams. Clamp-on fixings and surface cable runs can avoid drilling. We'd suggest options and positions, and you agree them with the conservation officer first.

Our Shardlow cottage gets damp in the walls. Is that bad for the wiring?

It can be. Damp corrodes metal back boxes and terminals and can let current track where it shouldn't. An insulation test shows whether it is affecting the circuits. Where the damp can't be cured, we use sealed accessories and keep cables out of the wettest walls.

I contacted Josh from a local magazine initially to put a new light in and then to have all my light switches replaced. Josh has been professional, polite, on time and respectful on both visits…
