Electrical work in Draycott

  • DE72 postcodes
  • About 5 miles from our Chaddesden base
  • NAPIT registered, every job certified

Draycott is a former lace-making village on the A6005, dominated by the clock tower of Victoria Mill, which has since been converted into apartments. Around it are streets of Victorian terraces built for mill workers, along with later semis and new homes. The terraces are where we do most of our rewiring and board replacement, while newer homes tend to need chargers and extra circuits. Each installation is tested and certified against the current regulations.

Homes in Draycott

Draycott grew after its station opened in 1852, from about 1,160 people in 1851 to 2,300 by 1911. Victoria Mill, now Grade II listed, was built between 1888 and 1899, along with closely spaced semis on and between Sawley Road and Station Road. The houses on Victoria Avenue are early 20th century, and Milner Avenue, Meadow Close and Wallis Close came later. The mill shut in 1970 and has since been converted into flats. Houses of 100 years or more were wired well after they were built, so the cable may be newer than the house, or very old.

Asked in Draycott

I own a flat in Victoria Mill. Can you add sockets to a solid brick wall?

Yes, but check with the management company first, and because the mill is listed, ask whether consent is needed for chasing. Where chasing isn't allowed, slim surface trunking or skirting trunking does the job neatly. We'll give you both options.

Our Victoria Avenue house is about 100 years old. How do we know if it's had a full rewire?

Look at the cables going into the board. Grey or white PVC suggests a rewire at some point since the 1960s. Black rubber or lead-covered cable means original or very early wiring. Some houses have both. An EICR gives you the full picture.

Really impressed with Josh. I arranged to get a quote for a new consumer unit and he turned up on time to do this and it was sent quickly. Once I approved the quote which was very reasonable he spent most of the day installing it…
