If you have just ordered an electric car, a home charger is the next job on the list. With us, fitting a home EV charger you've already bought typically costs £450 plus VAT, depending on the installation. If you'd like us to supply the charger as well, we quote the charger and fitting together. Here is what changes the price and what the installation actually involves.

As a real example, we fitted a Sync Energy charger on a two-car driveway in Oakwood for £900, with a 7.5 metre tethered lead so it reaches either car.

What affects the cost of a home charger

Most of the difference between one quote and another comes down to a handful of things:

  • The charger itself. Tethered or untethered, the lead length and the smart features all change the price.
  • How far the charger is from your consumer unit or meter. A longer cable run means more materials and labour.
  • Whether your consumer unit has room. Some homes need a small separate unit for the charger.
  • Your existing electrical supply and earthing. Older installations sometimes need work before a charger can be added.
  • Where it goes. A charger on the house wall is simpler than one on a detached garage or a post.

We look at all of this on a survey, so the written quote you get is for your house and not a guess.

Which chargers do you fit?

We install all the major brands. Our preferred makes are Hypervolt, Ohme and Sync Energy.

Tethered or untethered?

A tethered charger has its own lead permanently attached, so you just pull up and plug in.

An untethered charger is a socket, and you use the cable that came with the car. It looks neater on the wall and suits households that may change cars.

If two cars will share the charger, think about where each one parks. A longer tethered lead can save you shuffling cars around.

What the installation involves

We survey the property, fit the charger and its protective devices, test the circuit and show you how it works. We handle the notification to the network operator (DNO), and you get the certificate for the work.

Are there grants for home chargers?

Government grants have been available for some renters, flat owners and landlords, but the rules and deadlines change. Check the current eligibility on GOV.UK before you order. Grants are claimed through an OZEV-approved installer. We are not OZEV-approved at the moment, so if you qualify for a grant, you will need an approved installer to claim it.

Can any electrician fit an EV charger?

An EV charger is a new circuit, so it must be installed and certified by a registered electrician and comply with BS 7671. JJS Electrical Solutions is NAPIT registered, and all our work is certified.
