Good to know
What's the difference between a partial and a full rewire?
A partial rewire replaces some circuits, usually the rooms being renovated, and leaves the rest. The circuits that stay have to be tested to show they're safe to keep and connect to. A full rewire replaces everything from the consumer unit out.
Why run a cable for WiFi instead of using a mesh system?
Mesh units pass the signal between themselves over the air, and each hop through a wall loses speed. A Cat 6 cable from the router to an access point gives that part of the house a full-speed wired link, which is far more reliable in long single-storey layouts.
Does a bathroom extractor fan need an electrician?
Fitting one usually means work in a room with a bath or shower. Under the Building Regulations in England, adding to or altering circuits close to a bath or shower is notifiable work, so it needs to be done and certified by someone registered with a scheme like NAPIT.
Can electrical work be done in stages during a renovation?
Yes. The first fix (cables, back boxes) goes in before plastering, and the second fix (sockets, switches, lights) after decorating. On a longer project we come back at each stage as the rooms are ready.
